QR (Quick Response) codes were originally invented in 1994 by Denso Wave for tracking automotive components. Today, they are ubiquitous across restaurant menus, product packaging, and billboard advertising.

However, standard monochrome black-and-white QR codes feel disconnected from modern brand aesthetics. How can you embed a company logo into the middle of a QR matrix without breaking the code?

The Mathematics: Reed-Solomon Error Correction

QR codes do not store raw bytes linearly. Instead, they use **Reed-Solomon error correction** polynomials to append mathematical redundancy.

QR codes support four error correction levels: - **Level L**: Recovers ~7% of damaged or obscured codewords. - **Level M**: Recovers ~15% of damaged codewords. - **Level Q**: Recovers ~25% of damaged codewords. - **Level H (High)**: Recovers up to **30% of damaged or obscured codewords**.

By selecting **Level H**, nearly one-third of the entire code matrix can be physically covered, stained, or replaced with a graphic without causing a read failure!

Safe Center Logo Placement

To ensure universal compatibility across iOS Camera and Android Google Lens:

  1. **Calculate the Safe Bounding Box**: The embedded logo badge should never exceed 20% to 24% of the QR code's total area.
  2. **Preserve the Finder Patterns**: The three large concentric squares in the corners (and the smaller alignment pattern) must never be overlapped or distorted.
  3. **Add High-Contrast Padding**: When drawing a center logo, render a solid background badge with a subtle border around the icon. This prevents the logo's outer pixels from merging with adjacent QR data modules.
  4. **Vector SVG vs Raster PNG**: For print production (business cards, menus, merchandise), raster PNGs can introduce blur. Exporting mathematically pure SVG paths guarantees razor-sharp edges at any billboard scale.

You can test this in action using our free, in-browser **Branded QR Code Studio**.
